Keeping fit with back problems

Background

Patt has suffered with a back problem for many years and was even encouraged to wear a corset to relieve the pain at one point. Further degeneration has started to affect her life.

  • Water Temperature: 31˚C
  • Speed: 2.0 to 5.0kph
  • Depth: 1100mm
  • Resistance Jets: Not activated
  • Direction: Fowards, backwards and sideways
  • Number of Sessions: 2

Outcomes

Patt has had a long-standing back problem and suffered with pain from an early age. She was previously a PE teacher and has enjoyed sport throughout her life, which means she's otherwise physically fit and in great shape.

As time has gone on, Patt's back has become arthritic and developed degenerative problems with the discs. This has really affected her ability to exercise, which is a big part of her social life.

Even though Patt is at the beginning of her programme, she has already been able to run at a speed of 5kph and experienced no pain. The water fully decompressed her spine, allowing her discs to move more freely and improve her range of movement.

Training in the underwater treadmill has enabled Patt to keep fit again and enjoy all the benefits of exercise.
