Fractured femur - Karen

Fractured femur rehabilitation following a horse riding accident

Karen fractured the neck of her femur, falling off a horse – an occupational hazard as she owns a livery yard. The bone required pinning and she arrived at H2O Physio three weeks post surgery. On crutches and finding it difficult to mobilise, Karen needed to rehabilitate and return to work as soon as possible.

  • Duration: 30 minutes
  • Water Temperature: 31˚C
  • Speed: 2.0 to 5.0kph
  • Depth: 1200 down to 800mm
  • Resistance Jets: Not activated
  • Direction: Forward
  • Number of Sessions: 6

Karen's programme was centred around rebuilding muscle strength, following the operation and period of inactivity during her recuperation.

Sessions in the underwater treadmill allowed her to exercise in the safe, supportive environment that the water provided. As Karen progressed, the intensity of the training was boosted by gradually dropping the water-level and increasing the speed.

After just three sessions, Karen was off her crutches and after six sessions, she was almost fully recovered.
