Osteoarthritis - Denzil

Objective

Improved mobility of patient suffering with osteoarthritis

Background

Denzil had very limited mobility and was in constant pain, caused by arthritis in his hip and spine. His quality of life was reduced and he was unable to get out and about much.

Before the H2O Physio sessions, Denzil could only walk for a few minutes at a time and relied on the use of his stick.

Programme

  • Duration: 25 minutes
  • Water Temperature: 31˚C
  • Speed: 2.0kph, gradually increased to 3.5kph
  • Depth: 1100mm
  • Resistance Jets: Not activated
  • Direction: Forward and reverse
  • Number of Sessions: 12

Outcomes

After just two sessions Denzil reported his pain levels to have reduced to 7/10 and said he felt 90% better.

The water level set at waist height reduced body weight by 50%, making exercise easier and taking the load off joints.

The warm temperature helped with pain reduction which increased range of motion.

By session two, Denzil was able to walk forwards, backwards and sideways as well as performing squats and single leg squats in the water

Psychological benefits were gained as Denzil enjoyed the sense of achievement and the belief that improved mobility was possible.
